You really must check this out - it's an outstanding website with a wealth of activities for all curricular areas, including writing frames, maths games, interactive sorting and matching activities, and art activities to name but a few! It's from the makers of 2simple software, and as we don't have any of their resources in school yet, this website provides a great opportunity to use their amazing creative tools.

This is a great ICT art activity. You can create collage style pictures very much like the style of Archimboldo - I remember spending ages with children cutting pictures of fruit from magazines to make these kind of displays! (Not that I think you should stop doing magazine collages!) You can choose from different themes to create your picture, including flowers, fruit, animals, facial features, gothic patterns, candy, beads and animals.

This site used to charge for it's use, with the odd freebie which I used, but now it's all free! It provides a comprehensive set of interactive activities for literacy, numeracy, science, history, geography and ICT. Truly wonderful cross-curricular ideas and great fun for children to learn, I'll be checking here regularly for starter and plenary activities, I recommend this highly! The iboard website.

Giving children a voice - Bugbears on CBBC

Bugbears is a webpage where children can record themselves talking about any topic and post it anonymously. They can make their own animated bugbear character and give their character a voice by recording their own (disguising it if they want). Visitors can respond by giving hugs, showing respect, letting them know they feel the same, or giving advice. The purpose of the site is to give children the opportunity to share their feelings, gaining suport and building empathy. It is strictly moderated. Worth a look.

The end of Sparklebox?

If any of you read the TES forums, you may have read about this. It seems many LEAs in England have banned Sparklebox access in schools. To see why click here. Another reason can be seen here.
Very sad news, and it seems many users of the TES forum feel it is now morally wrong to be using the Sparklebox materials. It's not known if the site will continue to operate for much longer. Maybe it's time to make our own resources more often. The decision to use it is yours!

The Scottish Water website has lots of great interactive activities and games as well as information and worksheets about water. It's a fantastic resource, and there's something for every age group. I used it last year with P4, and it was great for children to see where water comes from and goes when it becomes waste, and how it is treated. There are games and quizzes to reinforce learning.

If ever there was a way to demonstrate to your class the power of ICT and technology, the recent events in Iran can...

They have been described as the Twitter revolution, such has been the influence of the social networking site which allows instant 'chatter' between users. With traditional media barred, young protesters have turned to the internet. YouTube and Facebook have played their part, and Twitter has allowed protesters to communicate with each other and the outside world in real time. Such is the importance in Iran that the company had postponed planned maintenence, but denied reports that the decision was influenced by a request from the US State Department. (The Independent 21st June)

There is an incredibly moving post written by Steven Weber here in which he describes a video that is currently circulating on Facebook showing the death of a young Iranian woman.

In response a poster describes how this sentiment applies to people engaged in nonviolent struggles all around the globe, not just in Iran. They're in Burma, Pakistan, Belarus, Zimbabwe, Tibet, Western Sahara, Iraq, Egypt, Palestine, West Papua, Vietnam, and Venezuela, just to name a few. They are all risking their lives for their freedom from oppression, and I think those of us in the free world would do well to heed the words of Aung San Suu Kyi, the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, who asked us to "use [our] liberties to help promote [theirs]."

Keeping their struggles in the spotlight, maintaining solidarity, and refusing to give up hope are all ways we can do that.

While I would obviously not suggest this video should be shown to children, I feel strongly that children should be aware of their role to play in being a global citizen. The study of Global Citizenship promotes an awareness and understanding of the world as a community and teaches us that we all hold responsibility for our actions.

Looks like with a bit of time spent on setting this up, it could be amazingly useful. A user wrote:
"Since discovering it I wonder how I ever survived without it. I use it to record tasks that I need to do - a bit like a still photo of all the plates that I am spinning. It tells me what I need to do and when. I can set tasks to repeat. I can remind me about things that need to be done months in advance. I will never forget what needs to be prepared for a meeting. It even reminds me when to order new asthmas inhalers. It stores everything I need to remember. Glogster is a brilliant webpage where you can create posters which can have images, text, video and sound embedded in the page. It's fantastic! You have to register, which takes a few seconds. There's an education page, where I've signed up and plan to use with classes in ICT this term. You'll no doubt have seen the headlines about this, which was launched on Friday. It's now possible to study the local area without leaving school!
Edinburgh seems to have been photographed during the summer holiday - loads of tourists and the school gate is padlocked. Can't be the weekend because I saw a postie delivering mail!
You can view it as a layer in Google maps (no download needed). I've found one person I think I know - two children are sitting on the pavement in Dumbiedykes, one of them I recognise, the other I'm not so sure. Take a look:

Since we have a new Spanish family at school, I've been searching for some basic vocabulary to try and communicate with them, and found this fantastic website. It covers lots of languages, including Polish which I know a lot of us will find very useful! It has short video clips of children speaking phrases - it would be great to teach the rest of the children in your class. Take a look, I'm going to find this invaluable!

Google Earth

There was a news article I read last week which reminded me how great this is. Apparently, someone thought they'd spotted the lost city of Atlantis in the new oceans feature of Google Earth - sadly it was not to be.

There's loads of other amazing things to look at though - new features mean that you can now explore the sea floor, Space, the surface of Mars, and go back in time to explore the past through historical data.

On the download page you can also look at an Education section which shows some fantastic applications like a guide to Ancient Rome, an animation of rising sea levels to see the effect of climate change and many many more.

Survivor - Who will you allow to live?!!!

This is a great task for stimulating group discussion. It involves finding out about survivors from a ship wreck who are marooned on a lifeboat. The children have 20 minutes to choose two people to send off the lifeboat before it sinks (thereby saving the others), by reading their personal information and listening to their opinions. There are record sheets to print off so children can record their group's findings and ideas.
This would be a really good way to make use of the IWB for a one off lesson which you could then build on with further group tasks.

A wee reminder about this website that Lesley has registered us with - It's a great resource for your class to learn about energy, fossils fuels, climate change and what we can do about it.
We can win prizes for the school by earning 'leaves'. We can earn leaves when lesson plans are downloaded, and if you follow the link to the British Gas website,you can compete a home energy savers report and donate leaves to the school.
Our target is 16 207 leaves, and to date we've got 3610! We get 100 leaves for every lesson plan downloaded and up to 150 for completing an energy savers report.
There's also a games section for children to play, and they can earn leaves for getting high scores (I got us into the leader board but not high enough to get leaves, but I'll keep trying!)

This is like a simplified version of these - and I think its more intuitive to use and can be learned really quickly. There's different advantages to all these mind mapping programs, so if you think someone in your class would benefit from using them, let me know and I'll recommend which would be best.

I've been working on a new website for our school recently, as the old one was made by a web designer we no longer have contact with, and it's easier to have someone in school update it. (I think the old one was last updated about 6 years ago!)
Unfortunately this means it won't look quite as slick, but I hope to keep it up to date and make sure there's lots more on it. This website is great - children can practise mental maths and spelling, and try to win awards and trophies at different ability stages. You have to register and choose a class name and password before letting your class play. It's good typing practise too!

Once I'm back at school, one of the first things I'll be doing is making sure all classrooms have the software they need installed on their computers. (I think everyone does, but I'll need to do an audit to make sure).
Last year I downloaded lots of Clicker files and saved them in the school shared folder - please make use of these!

Thanks for taking time to look at my blog! This year I thought I'd post all ICT stuff here rather than sending emails and handing out newsletters. If you bookmark this page, you can check it every once in a while to see if there's anything new. I'll keep a list of useful websites, and post any tips for using ICT that are passed on to me. I've started uploading some resources which might be useful too - far too much time on my hands being off work with this stupid broken toe!
